Losing a loved one is never easy, and many families are unsure of what to do when death occurs. At Memorial Funeral Specialist, we are here to guide you step by step through the entire process so you can focus on being with your family while we take care of the arrangements.
Step 1: Confirming the Death
If death occurs at home:
- Call us immediately. We can help arrange for a doctor to certify the death.
- You may also contact your family doctor or a neighbourhood doctor willing to make a house call.
- If the doctor is able to certify, he/she will issue the Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD) on the spot.
- If no doctor is able to certify, you will need to call the police. They will arrange for your loved one to be sent to the HSA Mortuary (SGH Block 9) for certification.
If death occurs in a hospital:
- The hospital will issue the CCOD.
- Our team will assist with the rest of the procedures and arrangements.
If death occurs overseas:
- Contact us immediately. We will handle repatriation and documentation so your loved one can return home with dignity.
Step 2: Registering the Death & Retrieving the Digital Death Certificate
Since May 2022, Singapore has moved to a fully digital death registration system. This means that physical death certificates are no longer issued.
- After receiving the CCOD from the doctor or hospital, you can download the digital death certificate via the MyLegacy portal or app using Singpass.
- Ensure you have the necessary details (such as the CCOD number) before accessing the certificate.
- This digital death certificate will be required for funeral arrangements and other administrative matters.
Step 3: Preparing Essential Items
Before the funeral arrangements begin, please prepare:
- One full set of clothing (including undergarments, shoes, and socks) for your loved one’s final journey.
- One photograph (hard copy or soft copy) for enlargement to be used at the wake.
If you are unable to prepare these items immediately, don’t worry — our team can collect them from you later.
Step 4: Funeral Arrangements
Once the official documents are in order, our experienced funeral advisors will:
- Guide you through your options (religion, type of service, burial or cremation).
- Assist with wake setup, decorations, and necessary bookings.

We have made the correct choice in choosing Memorial Funeral services to handle my mother’s wake. Their staff come across as very caring, empathetic and experienced.
Everything went smoothly without a hitch and this had taken a load from us while we are grieving. While we were mostly blur and not sure what to do initially, he came over late in the night and advised us on the various packages without insisting that we took the most expensive ones. I called the general line in the morning, and the funeral services director Joseph came over to discuss and go through the arrangements within the next hour or so. Very prompt.
Us being clueless about all these, he explained the various procedures very clearly for us and then let us decide on the approach and package we want, without being pushy about the various add-ons.
The set up was done quite promptly and quite presentable overall, with skirtings for all tables and chairs. We provided a rather low resolution soft copy portrait photo of the deceased and they were able to beautify it to look really good.
They made sure to cover all bases so that we don't have to worry about logistical matters and could focus on going through the wake. Things like flower water basin, extension cord to provide power sockets, properly chained and locked safebox for baijin, nice portable toilet, various misc items like tissue, toilet paper, drinks on consignment basis, and monks who chanted and provided the daily offerings/meals for the deceased, etc.
The staff wore formal shirt and long pants, looking very professional and presentable. On the last day, they even don on vests to look even more professional, while bearing the discomfort. All these show how they pay attention to detail to make everything look presentable.
Joseph was also meticulous, going through the various procedures with us in detail, and reminding us about upcoming ones so that we are prepared. After the wake was over and all the payments settled, he still made it a point to check back with us to remind us about the subsequent procedures that we should do.
If anyone is skeptical and thinks I'm affiliated to them, I assure u I'm not, and I'm purely coming from the angle to help add on the positive reviews so that more ppl can consider engaging them for their services.
