Guide to Visiting a Columbarium During Qing Ming Festival

The Qingming Festival is a traditional Chinese festival observed by Chinese communities worldwide. It usually falls on the 4th, 5th or 6th of April each year, depending on the solar calendar. But what does the Qingming Festival actually represent?

And is there anything you should know before visiting a columbarium during this time?

The Origins of Qingming Festival

The Qingming Festival was held to commemorate Jie Zitui, a nobleman from the Zhou dynasty (1150-221 BCE). He was known for his loyalty and selflessness, having once saved his lord, Duke Wen of Jin, during a time of exile by sacrificing his own flesh to feed him.

However, after Duke Wen regained his throne, Jie Zitui chose to retreat into the mountains with his mother, refusing rewards or recognition. When Duke Wen later tried to find him, a fire was set in the forest to force Jie Zitui out.

Tragically, Jie Zitui and his mother died in the fire. Moved by guilt and remorse, Duke Wen ordered a day of remembrance, which later evolved into what we now know as the Qingming Festival.

Modern Day Qingming Festival

Today, the Qingming Festival is held to honour loved ones who have passed on. Known as tomb sweeping day in English, families would visit the resting places of their ancestors to pay their respects. This often includes:

  • Cleaning and tidying the tomb or columbarium niche
  • Offering flowers, fruits and food as a sign of respect
  • Lighting joss sticks or incense for prayers and blessings
  • Burning joss paper to symbolically provide necessities for the afterlife (where permitted)
  • Paying respects through prayers or moments of silence
  • Sharing stories and memories of the departed with family members
  • Spending quiet time reflecting on family roots and ancestry
  • Teaching younger generations about traditions, values and remembrance

Visiting a Columbarium During the Qingming Festival

If the deceased are kept in a columbarium, Qingming visits tend to be slightly different from traditional grave visits. Nonetheless, the meaning remains the same. Columbariums are usually much busier during this period, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Many families plan their visits early in the morning or on weekdays to avoid the peak crowds. Some columbariums may also implement crowd control measures or require advance booking during Qingming, so it is advisable to check beforehand.

What to Prepare For Qingming Festival

Here are some things to consider when preparing for your visit:

  • Offerings and Items: Bring flowers or food that your loved ones enjoyed. Some columbariums also allow joss sticks or incense, but it’s best to check the regulations first. Some items may be restricted due to safety reasons.
  • Clothing and Comfort: Dress modestly to show your respect. You should also wear something comfortable as you’ll be standing for most of the time.
  • Time Management: Try to visit early in the morning or on weekdays to avoid large crowds. If the columbarium requires advance booking during Qingming, make your reservation in advance.
  • Respectful Conduct: Maintain a calm and respectful demeanor. Keep phone calls and conversations to a minimum, and follow any instructions from staff regarding visiting protocols.
  • Practical Supplies: Bring tissues, water and hand sanitizer, as facilities may be limited or busy during peak periods.

What Not to Do During Qingming Festival

  • Avoid taking photos of the columbarium as this is considered disrespectful and may also bring bad luck.
  • Avoid sweeping after 3pm as this is believed to be an inauspicious time.
  • Avoid wearing overly bright or flashy clothing as this is considered disrespectful.
  • A columbarium is a place for reflection so avoid loud conversations or phone calls.
  • Avoid leaving offerings unattended or scattered as this can create clutter and may be unsafe.
  • Avoid bringing pets to maintain a respectful and calm environment.
  • Avoid rushing through the visit and take your time to reflect.
